Maranta 'Nocturne-umbra' is a forgiving choice for most rooms, developing a compact rosette within its first year.

Position it in medium filtered light and rotate the pot monthly for even growth. Water when the leaves just begin to soften; the fastest way to lose one is a saucer left full.

Aim for a pebble tray in heated rooms and use coco coir with added bark — roots here want air as much as water. New leaves emerge paler and darken over their first fortnight.
